According to a new survey conducted by LJ Research Hotel Monitor, ‘Good Public Transport Links’ was voted the most influential factor when choosing accommodation for business travel. A ‘City Centre Location’ came in at a close second, with 33% of respondents seeing it as an important factor when choosing accommodation. Only 14.9% voted ‘Review of the Accommodation’ as a strong influence, which is surprising given the strong emphasis that travellers put into reading reviews on websites like TripAdvisor when deciding upon visitor survey why chosen hotel

Reports about business travel trends and travel productivity have soared recently and LJ Research Hotel Monitor’s research follows suit with two of Carlson Wagonlit Travel’s (CWT) 2013 reports about travel. The first report reveals that companies are looking to control ground transport costs by reducing employees’ use of cars on business trips, while the second shows that the closer employees are to transport links the lower their stress levels, resulting in a higher productivity during business trips.

The results of the surveys are no surprise to SilverDoor, as proximity to transport links is one of the most popular specifications we receive when clients enquire about accommodation. This is why we include the distance from the apartment to the nearest transport links. It means that our clients can plan their journey, from the nearest transport link to wherever they will be going every day, ahead of time and judge the apartment by commute times as well as the rate.

A good example is New York City, which is one of our most popular business travel destinations. In The Big Apple, an estimated 54.7% of its workers use public transport, placing the city second in the ranking of highest rate of public transportation use in the United States, confirming Forbes magazine’s article which states that “New York and its suburbs represent about one quarter of the nation’s public transport sector”.

It seems appropriate to conclude that generally, serviced apartment providers are giving customers what they expect and more importantly, what they want. The reports reveal a big shift in market dynamics as for many business travellers, accommodation is their first base when arriving in a new city. Therefore, providing easy access and a good experience is imperative in order to ensure repeat business.
